Running PHP 1.0 in 2024

To celebrate PHP's 29th birthday, I decided to try running PHP 1.0.

So I downloaded the source code, compiled it on my MacBook, wrote a simple CGI server using PHP 8.3, and tried to understand what was PHP 1.0 actually capable of doing. Spoiler alert: not much.
